Can I fly over the Great Barrier Reef?

July 19, 2015 By Airlie Beach Online

19 Jul

Most people like to snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef and see the different formations of coral and the magical colours in the variety of fish.  How about flying over the Great Barrier Reef to see it all from above? Those that have already seen the Great Barrier Reef will tell you that they did not realise the length and breadth of the reef until they saw it for themselves.

How do you get to see the Great Barrier Reef from the sky?

  • Take a helicopter flight from the Reefworld Pontoon -10mins is $135.00 per person,- 20 mins is $250.00 per person.
  • You can cruise one way to Reefworld, snorkel and helicopter back the other way – $440.00 per person
  • Take a 1 hour scenic flight in a fixed wing plane – $199.00 per person.
  • Take a Seaplane scenic flight (1 hr) or land at the Great Barrier Reef and snorkel for 2 hours – from $330.00 per person to $565.00 per person
  • Helicopter Flight to Knuckle Reef and spend 2 hours snorkelling at your private pontoon – $1,055.00 per person based on 2 people or $749.00 per person based on 3-4 people.

Visiting the islands in the Whitsundays.

July 11, 2015 By Airlie Beach Online

11 Jul

Can we visit the islands when we go to Whitehaven Beach?  Out of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays group you will travel past quite a few islands with the majority being nationals parks.  If you want to stop on an island, you can visit Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, Palm Bay resort as day guests.  There is a ferry service from the mainland, Airlie Beach to Daydream Island and Hamilton Island.  Palm Bay is currently being serviced by the Island Transfer fast boat until Long Island is completed renovations (2016 approximately) and returned to the ferry service.

Hayman Island is not available to day guests.  Currently, Long Island is being renovated throughout 2015, South Molle is not accessible by any of the ferries.

There are day tours that incorporate Whitehaven Beach and Hamilton Island, Whitehaven Beach and Daydream Island and Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.  The other day tours in the Whitsundays will not be able to access Hamilton Island and Daydream Island as they are under contract between suppliers or the ferry service and the island owners.

If you wish to camp on any of the national parks on Whitsunday Island, Hook Island or the Molle Group, there is an Island Transfer service available for these campers.

Our tour website www.airliebeachonline.com.au is available under DAY TOURS and WHITEHAVEN BEACH in the drop down menu. Feel free to email bookings@airliebeachonline.com.au for further information and bookings.

Whale migration to Whitsundays

June 17, 2015 By Airlie Beach Online

17 Jun

It is now the time of year (June, July, August, September ) where the whale migration is heading towards the Whitsundays and our beautiful playground for everyone to see. They will pass Surfers Paradise and Hervey Bay as two other destinations to see the whales playing.

The day tours in the Whitsundays, will often experience seeing the whales, as they navigate through the waterways to visit the top snorkelling sites and Whitehaven Beach. Don’t forget the Great Barrier Reef tours.

I have been very lucky living in the Whitsundays since 2007 and saw my first whale on a Great Barrier Reef tour, then just last year I was out on my birthday with Derwent Hunter in September, and it was a magical day seeing whales and pods of dolphins all in one day, one I will never forget!

It is a sight to see when a whale breaches in the beautiful waters and something you have to place on your ‘TO DO’ list.

Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet

May 23, 2015 By Airlie Beach Online

23 May

Whitehaven Beach is a 7 klm stretch of beach from the southern end of Whitsunday Island to the northern end, which is close to the Hill Inlet walk.  Most day tours and the overnight sailing boats will visit the 7 klm long stretch, however some of the tours will visit the northern Whitehaven Beach close to Hill Inlet.  They are both the same silica sand and you won’t have enough time to walk the beach or cross over from the northern end to walk to the southern end. When you are comparing day tours Mantaray, Ocean Rafting North will visit the northern end of Whitehaven Beach as they spend more time snorkelling on these tours.  Whitehaven Xpress, Ocean Rafting South, Big Fury and Camira visit the southern end. Big Fury and Camira do not visit the Hill Inlet.  Cruise Whitsundays has a Full Day tour to Whitehaven Beach where you will stay on the 7 klm stretch of beach for up to 6 hours and then part of the day, you will be taken to the Hill Inlet and a snorkelling stop as part of the tour.

Looking at the photo, the northern end and Hill Inlet is at the bottom of the photo, the swirling sands is off to the right and the 7klm stretch of Whitehaven Beach is at the top of the picture. When it is high tide you cannot get across from one end to the other and often you need low tide so you have plenty of beach to relax on. This is photo is with compliments of Heli Reef and their helicopter service to Whitehaven Beach.  https://airliebeachonline.com.au/whitsunday-tour/scenic-flight-whitehaven-beach-escape/
